The Berkeley Medal, the Berkeley Citation, and the Chancellor’s Distinguished Honor Award are the highest honors bestowed by the University of California, Berkeley. These prestigious awards are given to individuals for distinguished achievement that reflects the highest ideals of the University in service to society or to the campus.
Because the University of California does not confer honorary degrees, the Berkeley Medal was established in 1981 as the University’s top honor. It is to be bestowed, at most, three or four times a year. The Medal recognizes exceptionally distinguished individuals whose achievements or contributions to society illustrate the ideals of the University and contribute to its goals, and whose careers have manifestly benefited the public weal beyond the demands of tradition, rank, or direct service to the University. The presentation of the Medal may not be made in absentia and should occur at a public function of the Berkeley campus.
The Medal is an honor separate and distinct from all other Berkeley awards; in rare cases it may be bestowed on recipients of the Berkeley Citation. The Medal may be awarded to any notable figure except those then holding elective public office in California or nonacademic University appointments.
Anyone on or off the campus may nominate an individual for the Berkeley Medal, stating the reasons for the nomination. Different aspects of the nominee's career should be documented by a minimum of three separate letters of recommendation. The nomination should be addressed to the Chancellor (c/o University Events and Ceremonies), who will forward it to his Advisory Committee on Honors. The committee will then review the qualifications of the nominee and send its confidential recommendation to the Chancellor, who has the authority to accept or reject the recommendation and to select an appropriate occasion for presentation of the approved award.
In the 1967–68 academic year, when the University of California celebrated its 100th birthday, an honor entitled “The Centennial Citation” was created on the Berkeley campus. The Citation, intended for individuals and organizations rendering notable service to the University, allowed Berkeley to honor its most distinguished members and friends. At the end of the centennial year, the award was continued as the Berkeley Citation.
The Citation celebrates extraordinary achievement in the recipient’s field coupled with outstanding service to the Berkeley campus. A framed document bearing the University seal, the Citation is awarded by the Chancellor or the Chancellor’s delegate at a public function. It is never awarded in absentia. The approval of the award is kept confidential so that the presentation may come as a surprise to the recipient.
The Citation may be awarded to a wide range of distinguished people, academic or nonacademic, whose attainments significantly exceed the standards for advancement in their fields and whose contributions to Berkeley are manifestly “above and beyond the call of duty.”
Anyone on or off the campus may nominate an individual for the Berkeley Citation, stating the reasons for the nomination. Different aspects of the nominee’s career should be documented by a minimum of three separate letters of recommendation.

In 1996, the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Honors recommended the creation of a new honor to be named “The Chancellor’s Distinguished Honor Award.”
The Chancellor’s Distinguished Honor Award is intended for distinguished visitors—such as heads of state, artists of international fame, and other renowned individuals whose activities are primarily outside the campus community—whose presence honors and benefits Berkeley and whose great achievements in their fields the University salutes.
Those wishing to nominate an individual for the Chancellor’s Distinguished Honor Award should submit a written nomination to the Chancellor (c/o University Events and Ceremonies) stating why the person should be considered. The Chancellor has sole discretion over who shall receive the award.
Nominations and inquiries pertaining to all University awards should be directed to:
